Wheelchair Costume

Hello!

I love handing out candy on Halloween. I sit out on the steps, or now porch. It is fun checking out all of the kids’ costumes! I always at least dress up with Halloween theme clothes and accessories. Cat ears or some kind of witch hat is added, too. Last year’s witch hat even lit up.

This year, I decided to include my wheelchair in my Halloween costume. I was inspired by Games of Thrones and House of Dragons shows. Why not turn the wheelchair into the sword throne?

I may add side sword sections in the future, but this year, I wanted to get through doorways.

How was it made? Large cardboard box, shiny silver spray paint, glue sticks, and yarn. The tools were a pencil, yardstick, boxcutter, and scissors.

A very creative helper joined the project and made it a full-blown mission. Otherwise, I would have dropped the project and missed out on the joy of transforming my wheelchair into a fun accessory. Heck, drape a lap blanket, right, and most people would not notice the wheelchair.

9, 28 inch swords were cut out of the long sides of the box. The smaller box ends were used to make a sword sandwich. The bottom of the center sword is halfway down the sandwich. We used 2 large glue sticks on this sandwich. A filled storage bin weighted down the sandwich for a couple of hours.

The sword sandwich and crown strip (from box scraps) were then spray painted.

The crown strip was stapled.

Using scissors, 4 holes were punched near the sword sandwich “bread” corners. I have exposed posts near my seat back’s top. There are two seat back spots where we could tie the lower corners as well.

We used leftover yarn to make 4, 20 inch strands. I think you could also use string, thin rope, or zip ties.  Where you attach the sword sandwich, will decide the strand length.
