Challenge – Dog Training 2

Hello!

I wrote about training my dog to find/get/bring. Here is how we did that.

I started with treats. 1st Round was throwing treats off the deck while she sat, waiting next to me. “Find treat” was the release from sit and go search command. “Good girl, you find treat!” I said as soon as she found it. We played this several times.

2nd level was hiding treats around the deck.

3rd level was hiding treats around the house. She absolutely loves this, and I continue it.

4th level. We get her to “touch” “find” an object: ball, squirrel (toy), outside (talk button).  We reward each touch/find with a treat and “Good girl!”. Gradually, we wean from treat to just praise. It goes faster for her toys. I am now working on “phone”.

5th, we work with “get” and “bring.” Again, this goes quickly with toys as the reward is play. When the goal is getting the item out of the wheelchair’s way, stubbornness will delay action.

Frequency and patience are key at each level.
